This month, the Rise to Shine Education Foundation team made an important visit to Elgeyo-

Marakwet, a region where the threat of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) often rises whenever schools close or rumors begin to circulate. These visits are more than routine check-ins. They are moments of connection, protection, and deep community engagement.

During our time there, concerns surfaced about a possible FGM event being planned in one of the villages. Instead of waiting for confirmation, the team acted immediately and activated a safe sanctuary space within the community. This sanctuary is not just a physical place. It is a protective shield created to interrupt harmful cultural practices and offer girls a safe refuge where they can stay until the danger has passed. The community knows that when this space opens its doors, it signals vigilance, unity, and shared responsibility.

A key highlight of the visit was the role-playing sessions conducted with schoolchildren. Using relatable scenarios, the team helped the children understand how to recognize danger, say no, and seek help. These sessions were filled with curiosity, laughter, and learning. For many girls, it was the first time they heard that their voices matter and that they are allowed to question traditions that harm them. For boys, it was a lesson in becoming protectors rather than silent observers.

Our work in Elgeyo-Marakwet is strengthened by a colleague who has formed a strong

partnership with local church leaders and community elders. These leaders are stepping forward more boldly than ever before. Their involvement is reshaping community attitudes and building a stronger, united front against FGM.

This visit reminded us of a powerful truth. Change happens when a community decides that its daughters deserve safety, dignity, and opportunity. And in Elgeyo-Marakwet, that change is growing stronger every day.
